Swimming in God

“In God we live and move and have our being.   It is God who gives life to all, who gives power  and being to all that exists.  But for God’s sustaining Presence, all things would cease to be and fall back into nothingness.”  Consider that you are in God, surrounded and encompassed by God.  [You are] swimming in God.”

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

“God enables the soul to receive so much so that God himself has the opportunity to give much.  Never has a person longed after anything so intensely as God longs to bring a person  to the point of knowing him.  God is always ready but we are very unready.  God is near to us but we are very far from him.  God is within but we are outside.  God is at home in us but we are abroad.”

Meister Eckhart

We are swimming in God.  We are caught in the eternal fishnet of God’s presence, swimming in the ocean of divinity.  Jesus said the Kingdom of God is  among us and  within us (see translations of Luke 17:20-22).   The kingdom of God is here and now…here meaning ‘place’ and now meaning ‘time.’

The word for Kingdom is translated as “reign” meaning the “realm of the King/Queen and the realm in which the King/Queen ruled.” So the kingdom of God is the realm of God – God’s very Presence and Being.  God is indeed among us and within us for in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17: 27-28).  As Meister Eckhart said over 500 years ago, “the kingdom of God is God’s very self and all his wealth.”

God’s very being is the kingdom of God and the kingdom of God is within and among us.  So, God is within and among you and me which means that Blessed Teresa of Calcutta was speaking the truth: we are indeed “swimming in God.”
